Newcomer Acelo Semiconductor introduces GaAs PHEMT technology solution

Sept. 26, 2001
Sept. 26, 2001--Acelo Semiconductor Inc., a provider of semiconductor solutions that accelerate gateways across fiber optic networks, officially announced its launch.

Acelo Semiconductor Inc., a provider of semiconductor solutions that accelerate gateways across fiber optic networks, officially announced its launch. Acelo's current product line includes OC192 and OC768 analog chipset solutions for core and metro applications. The company holds an exclusive license covering PHEMT technology from Rockwell Scientific. Investors in Acelo include Rockwell Scientific, Cisco and Parakletos@Ventures.

Leveraging its exclusive license from Rockwell Scientific, Acelo designs, develops, manufactures and markets GaAs PHEMT-based integrated circuits, to later include other integrated circuit technologies. Key considerations for the analog chips in SONET transponders are switching speed, power dissipation and breakdown voltage, Acelo is committed to developing products that exceed the necessary chip requirements. The GaAs PHEMT technology provides the necessary performance elements required for OC192 and OC768 analog applications while offering a maturity level that directly addresses manufacturing and reliability concerns.

Acelo's products in fiber optic telecommunications include modulator/laser drivers and transimpedance amplifiers for the 10Gb/s and 40Gb/s systems (OC192, OC768), each with significant product advantages. As an example, the OC192 laser driver solution offers several benefits: the lowest power dissipation of 800-900mW at full-drive current -- which enables greater reliability and ease of packaging, a distinctively small size, which is critical for competitive modules -- and high gain/low noise which results in higher sensitivity. In addition, Acelo's OC768 modulator driver solution is a single chip solution capable of driving Lithium Niobate modulators. For the broadband wireless market, Acelo offers power and low noise amplifiers for the point to point and point to multipoint distribution systems operating at 30+ GHz.

Acelo is currently sampling the following products:

* OC192 Laser Driver

* Low power: Laser driver dissipates 800-900mW at full output current

* Small size (1.0 X 1.1) mm

* OC192 Modulator Driver

* High output voltage swing is 7.5 Vpp (with 26dB gain) @ 1.4W chip dissipation

* OC192 High Gain TIA

* High TZ gain of 10K ohms with limiting output

* OC768 Modulator Driver

* High output voltage swing is 8Vpp (with 17dB gain) @ 800 mW

* Wideband operation ranges from 100 KHz-50GHz (3dB pts.)

* OC768 TIA

* High TZ gain of 400-800 ohms

Acelo is developing mixed signal integrated circuit technologies for OC768 to complete its chipset offering for OC768 transponders. These products will be available in early 2002.
