Yipes Communications, Inc., a provider of scalable bandwidth, announced that its gigabit optical networks are connecting energy traders and operations personnel at Calpine Corporation's three Houston offices to each other and to the Internet at speeds up to 200 Megabits per second. Calpine has also used Yipes' instantly scalable networks to increase bandwidth to 1 Gigabit per second for data restore and disaster recovery operations. Calpine (NYSE:CPN), based in San Jose, Calif. is a fully integrated power company that provides customers across America with electricity
Calpine's operations in Houston include its energy trading and risk management offices, national systems operation center and natural gas exploration and production and central region business offices.
Calpine initially connected its main Houston data center to its two other Houston locations over Yipes' network with 100 Mbps links so that employees would experience one fast local area network, rather than feeling isolated on separate network islands. The company then increased its bandwidth to 200 Mbps, an upgrade requiring no investment in new equipment or long wait for new circuits to be provisioned. "
At the customer's request, Yipes recently increased the bandwidth between Calpine's offices to a full Gigabit per second to test the ability to restore backed up data on extremely short notice in case of a disaster.
