Stream Intelligent Networks lights fiber laid by robot in sewers

Stream Intelligent Networks Corp. and Bird On A Wire Networks, a Canadian provider of managed web hosting services, announced the successful completion of their first joint project -- the installation of a new, completely diverse high-speed network that will provide Bird On A Wire with virtually unlimited capacity and increased reliability while significantly reducing costs.

While service providers and other high volume data users line up for additional high-speed fiber-optic services, and fulfillment delayed by prolonged installation methods, Stream was able to provision a new Gigabit Ethernet network quickly, on Bird On A Wire's schedule. This was accomplished with a new technology known as STAR, which uses robots to install fiber-optic cable in existing municipal sewer systems.

STAR -- Sewer Telecommunication Access by Robot -- is a rapidly deployable new technology that uses robots to run fiber-optic cable through deeply buried sewers without construction. STAR lays fiber-optic cable up to eight times faster than open-trench methods while reducing the cost and annoying traffic disruptions of conventional roadwork. In addition, it eliminates the expensive, long-term street damage that results from traditional cable installations requiring excavation.

Based on existing, proven, and widely adopted Ethernet technology, Gigabit Ethernet provides extremely scalable bandwidth from 1 Mbps up to 1000 Mbps, delivering ideal service for high-speed Internet usage while eliminating unproductive compromises between cost, reliability and bandwidth. In addition, due to the almost universal utilization of Ethernet LANs, Gig-E is also easy to run and supports the infrastructure and protocols most customers are using now, at exceptional levels of price and performance.
