(NYSE:GX), which provides integrated telecommunications solutions over a global IP-based fiber optic network, announced it has connected Chile to its global fiber optic network and is providing services to customers from Santiago. With the commencement of services in Chile, Global Crossing claims it has become the first company to connect the principal telecommunications markets in Latin America and the largest economies of the Mercosur to a seamless, global fiber optic network.
Global Crossing completed final connection of its fiber optic ring around South America in February and is now fully operational in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Panama. The company expects to commence service in Peru and Venezuela in May 2001. In Colombia, Global Crossing has applied for a license to operate and provide advanced broadband telecommunications services.
The company's owned and operated network assets seamlessly connect virtually every major city in the region to each other, and to more than 200 major cities in North America, Europe and Asia.
Global Crossing provides a variety of broadband, IP and data services to clients in Latin America, including Comsat, Impsat Fiber Networks, Telecom Italia, Techtel, Centennial, Cable Onda and others. In Chile, the company is already providing services to Adexus and AT&T Latin America.
