Digital video

Philips Digital Videocommunication Systems, Knoxville, TN, and Compression Labs Inc., in San Jose, CA, have begun volume production and shipment of interactive Motion Picture Experts Group-2, or MPEG-2, digital set-top decoders for commercial switched digital fiber-optic networks. These set-top units can receive, decode and allow home or business users to control video entertainment services on television sets through a remote control device. The units are capable of receiving television signals and can also be used for homeshopping, electronic banking and interactive video games. The Philips/CLI terminals comply with MPEG-2 international standards for digital video compression and transport and with the MPEG-specified Musicam audio system.
