Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, Japan, will lay an undersea 10-gigabit-per-second fiber-optic cable that will link Kagoshima and Okinawa and become operational in May 1995. The $91.8 million, 950-kilometer cable link will accommodate 774,144 telephone lines. The extra capacity will be used to meet increasing demand for digital transmission by private television stations and other users.
