Telstra joins cable project: Australia`s Telstra Corp. Ltd. has joined 20 other international telecommunications organizations to plan a high-technology submarine optical-fiber cable system linking Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Western Europe. Known as Sea-me-we 3, the system will be a submarine digital lightwave superhighway connecting the United Kingdom, France, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. Sea-me-we 3 uses direct signal amplification and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy multiplexing technology to make each fiber pair within the network capable of carrying 120,960 64-kbit/sec circuits.
