The Switch expands network capacity between NY and Los Angeles

AUGUST 27, 2009 -- The Switch has increased its network capacity between The NY Switch and The Los Angeles Switch to support uncompressed HD-SDI between the two locations.

The Switch expanded its fiber network between New York and Los Angeles in August, lighting an OC-192 to provide uncompressed HD-SDI paths between the two coasts. This is the first time HD-SDI routes are available via The Switch's Inter-City On Demand (ICOD) service. The Switch offers HD-SDI on demand and with reservations at $10 per minute.

"The ability to offer HD-SDI routes between our two largest routing communities of NY and LA has allowed The Switch to aid in the Industry-wide transition to high definition," said Scott Beers, president and CEO of Beers Enterprises, Inc., owner and operator of The Switch. "Also, with the availability of uncompressed HD-SDI local circuits in NY and LA, customers can now send HD signals coast-to-coast without needing expensive ASI encoding and decoding equipment."

In addition to offering HD-SDI routes between LA and NY, The Switch has also increased the number of SDI 270-Mbps paths available between the two cities and lowered rates on SDI paths network-wide.

ICOD is a transmission service that allows customers to select 8 Mbps and 20 Mbps (between NY and DC only), 270-Mbps SDI, and now uncompressed HD-SDI paths through touch-screen control computers that eliminate the need to call a carrier. ICOD can be engaged for any length of time without incurring minimum transmission fees, the company asserts.

Beers continued, "With no booking fees or minimums for on demand service, customers have the ability to monitor expenses and pay for just what they need."
