SEPTEMBER 10, 2007 — The Silicon Photonics Alliance, the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association's (OIDA's) first formal community of interest (COI), has formed to promote silicon photonics in standards, commercial adoption, and vendor communication. Tom Palkert, system architect, Carlsbad, CA-based Luxtera, will lead the Alliance.

Members of the COI will participate in forums and collaborate to identify key applications areas for silicon photonics. The Alliance is charged with bringing silicon photonics into the optical standards bodies for improved interoperability among vendors, accelerating product development, and creating an ecosystem that fosters silicon-photonics adoption. Along with Luxtera, members include Corning, Kotura, Molex, and US Conec.

OIDA will formally introduce the Silicon Photonics Alliance COI to the industry September 11–12 at its "Perspectives on the Optoelectronics Industry: Advances, Challenges, and Growth Opportunities" forum in San Jose, CA. To learn more about the Alliance, contact David Iams at OIDA, or visit OIDA's Silicon Photonics Alliance web site.
