French ISP Ecritel selects Ekinops' DWDM platform

FEBRUARY 5, 2007 -- French Internet service provider Ecritel has selected the Ekinops (search for Ekinops) optical transport platform for deployment in its fiber-optic network in the Paris area. Ekinops designs and manufactures optical transport, DWDM, CWDM, and aggregation equipment.
Ecritel says its decision was based on the flexible architecture of the Ekinops platform and its ability to handle dynamic increases in capacity. Ecritel is deploying a DWDM network for transporting Gigabit Ethernet traffic in a metro optical network. The Ekinops equipment includes the PM1008 that uses TDM to aggregate and transport up to eight channels of Gigabit Ethernet or GFC traffic over a single OC-192/STM-64 10-Gbit/sec wavelength.
The PM 1008's aggregation capabilities enable service providers and enterprises to reduce the number of wavelengths used in CWDM or DWDM networks, reducing costs while increasing transport capacities, say Ekinops representatives. The PM 1008 module offers 1+1 protection and can reach distances up to 250 km using forward error correction (FEC) and long-haul optics.
"Ecritel experienced significant growth in 2006 and has become a leading provider for IT services," reports Frédéric Leduc, chief technical officer of Ecritel. "To meet the growing demand for capacity from our fiber networks, it was necessary to upgrade our existing WDM equipment. The Ekinops solution allowed us to evolve our network and respond rapidly to our customer's need, while keeping the costs well within our budget," he says.
Leduc added that the responsiveness of the Ekinops team was an important factor in Ecritel's decision.
"Ekinops' optical transport solutions allow service providers and private network to seamlessly migrate their networks with next generation DWDM equipment," adds Didier Bredy, CEO of Ekinops. "We are excited about the opportunity to work with a growing company like Ecritel. Upgrading existing WDM networks requires compatibility and flexibility, and our platform offers that plus an economic advantage that is highly desired by our customers," he contends.
