August 27, 2004 Cheltenham, UK -- ADC announced that KRONE, recently acquired by ADC, has launched a new blown-fiber option for its OM3 10-Gbit/sec fiber offering. Supporting link lengths up to 300 m, the new KRONE OM3 grade fiber can be blown-in to new or existing blown fiber tubes in bundles of 4, 8, or 12 fibers.

"The beauty of blown fiber installation," said Alastair Waite, fiber product manager of KRONE products for ADC, "is that upgrades to higher capacity can be performed simply and cost-effectively without expensive and disruptive cable laying."

Using simple fiber-blowing apparatus, the whole 300-m length of between 4 and 12 fibers can be blown-in in a matter of minutes. Once the upgraded fiber links are commissioned and in service, any previously used fiber can be simply recovered and re-used elsewhere.

The new OM3 blown fiber has a minimum effective modal bandwidth (EMB) of 2,000 MHz.km at 850-nm wavelength via standard lasers or VCSELs. It also eliminates the need for mode-conditioning patch cords on 1300-nm systems.

As with all fiber solutions developed by KRONE, the new OM3-grade 10-Gbit/sec blown fiber is fully supported with fiber patch panels, a range of fiber connectors, patch cords, and pigtails.

The OM3 blown fiber is suitable for 10-Gigabit Ethernet and OC-192, as well as the Fibre Channel (FC), 2xFC, and 4xFC commonly used in SANs and data centers. It meets TIA/EIA-492 AAAC, ISO/IEC 11801 OM, and IEC 60793-2-10 A1a.2 standards.
