April 19, 2005 Alameda, CA -- UTStarcom, a provider of IP-based, end-to-end networking platforms and services, today announced a contract with Japan Telecom, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Softbank Corp., to deploy several million lines of UTStarcom's NetRing 10000 STM-64 multi-service optical transport platform.

According to the company, its NetRing platform combines add-drop multiplexing (ADM), digital cross-connects (DCS), Ethernet switching, ATM multiplexing, and RPR functionality into an integrated, "pay-as-you-grow" multi-service system. The platform's products are designed to perform aggregation, grooming, cross-connect, and transport functions, in order to furnish SDH-based carrier networks with high-density STM-1 to STM-64, PDH (E1/DS1, E3/DS3), Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and ATM services.

"We anticipate a fast return on our investment in this technology, as the NetRing platform allows us the flexibility to offer our subscribers the voice and data services they want now, with the freedom of deploying additional revenue-generating services in the future," remarks Junichi Miyakawa, director, vice president, and executive officer of Japan Telecom.

The deployment is part of the carrier's construction of a fixed-line network to deliver high-speed broadband, voice, and video services to its subscribers. The network is projected serve all of Japan, from Hokkaido in the north, to Kyushu in the south.
