Dec. 1, 1997

Digital Equipment Corp., Maynard, MA, will roll out MediaOne Express service to its telecommuting employees, for use with its AltaVista Tunnel 97 software. The Express service of Boston-based MediaOne provides access to the Internet 50 times faster than telephone dial-up service. During a field trial, Digital used its Alta Vista Tunnel 97 software to create a private network for employees working from home. Employees connected to the Digital corporate network via MediaOne`s broadband infrastructure comprised of optical fiber and coaxial-cable technology. A cable modem delivered 1.5 Mbits/sec of downstream bandwidth and 300 kbits/sec of upstream bandwidth. The service is scheduled for distribution by year-end.
