May 17, 2002-- California Eastern Laboratories (CEL) has developed a new DWDM Multiple quantum well (MQW) DFB laser diode module featuring an integrated electro-absorption (EA) modulator. Developed for 2.5-Gbit/sec transmission, the new NX8566LE-CC is capable of a reach of over 240 km. Designed for DWDM ITU-T-based wavelengths (full C and L Band coverage), the new NX8566LE-CC is ideal for metro and long-haul applications, says the company.

Monolithically integrating the EA modulator saves space and simplifies a system's design. It also provides a solution that's lower cost and consumes less power than a discrete CW/modulator design, according to CEL. Among other features, the NX8566LE-CC offers high optical output power from fiber under modulation with a very low dispersion penalty. Specifications include:

  • Pf Output Power (under modulation): 0 dBm.
  • VMOD Modulation Voltage: 3 V max.
  • ITH Threshold Current: 20 mA typical.
The NX8566LE-CC is a monolithically structured MQW DFB laser and modular chip, housed in a hermetically sealed, 14-pin butterfly package. It features an internal optical isolator, monitor diode, thermistor, and thermo-electric cooler for increased efficiency. It is available now. For data sheets, see www.cel.com.
