Cable MSO Time Warner Cable (NYSE:TWC) says it will upgrade customers in Los Angeles, New York City, and Hawaii currently subscribing to its 50-Mbps Ultimate 50 customers to 100 Mbps.
TWC debuted the service tier in Kansas City last December, no doubt to combat competition from Google Fiber.
The Los Angeles upgrade to the new Ultimate 100 Internet tier has begun; upgrades for customers in New York City and Hawaii should be under way by the end of the year. The new tier will be available to all customers in the three markets in early 2014. Time Warner Cable says it will then launch the 100-Mbps in other markets next year as well.
“Consumers are adding more and more connected devices into their digital lifestyle. These new ultra-fast Internet speeds are designed to satisfy their growing demand to stream, download and connect simultaneously across multiple devices,” said Steve Cook, senior vice president and general manager of Time Warner Cable residential Internet. “As a thank you to our Ultimate Internet customers, we’re pleased to double their speed from 50 Meg to 100 Meg at no extra charge so that they can get everything they want online, even faster.”
In addition to the 100-Mbps download rates, Ultimate 100 tier subscribers will receive:
- 30 email accounts
- 10 GB of email storage space
- Free home WiFi
- Free access to more than 23,000 TWC WiFi Hotspots including more than 200,000 Cable WiFi Hotspots
- Free Internet security and parental controls software.
Time Warner Cable also revealed that it will replace its Lite Internet tier with a 2-Mbps offering, doubling its download speed. Priced at $14.99 per month, the new offering will be available beginning November 4.
