Redback Networks (Nasdaq:RBAK), a provider of advanced networking solutions, announced that Williams Communications (NYSE:WCG) will be deploying the Redback SmartEdge 800 multi-service optical platform in its fiber optic networks nationwide. The multi-year, multi-million dollar agreement with Redback allows Williams Communications to extend its leadership role by enabling it to increase the scalability and reduce the provisioning requirements in both its long haul and metro transport networks. The SmartEdge will be deployed in Williams Communications' markets throughout the United States.

The SmartEdge is a multi-service optical platform that provides significant advantages in system density and provisioning. For improving the economics and operations of existing SONET/SDH networks, the SmartEdge delivers up to six times more port density than traditional systems, thus enabling carriers and service providers to rapidly expand while minimizing space and power requirements. Paired with the NetOp management system, the SmartEdge also offers major advantages and operational savings through greatly simplified service provisioning. As leading carriers and providers migrate from traditional TDM transport to IP-based services, the SmartEdge also provides a platform to support both existing TDM and new IP services.
