Qwest expands relationship with ONI Systems for additional local broadband equipment
ONI Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:ONIS), a provider of optical telecommunications systems for the metropolitan and regional markets, announced that during the first quarter of 2001 Qwest Communications International Inc. continued to deploy ONI's ONLINE transport platforms in several additional U.S. cities. Qwest Local Broadband Division, which initially purchased ONI equipment in Q2 2000, is leveraging ONI's ONLINE transport platform to now deliver OC-192 (10 gigabit per second) services to its metro customers, providing an optical foundation for next generation wavelength services.
By taking advantage of ONI's OC-192/STM-64 (10 gigabits per second) interface offering for the ONLINE transport product family, Qwest can transport as much as 330 Gbps per fiber, as well as simultaneously offer OC-48 (2.5 Gbps) and OC-192 wavelength services on the same platform. As a result, Qwest can protect its current network investments, while offering more bandwidth in those metro cities.
Late last year, Qwest also selected ONI as one of its DWDM providers for its in-region local ATM network. ONI has successfully completed field and lab trials in Qwest's facilities to ensure interoperability with next-generation, high-capacity IP routers, switches and long haul equipment that are currently deployed in the Qwest network.
