Aevia certifies Alidian metro DWDM equipment as interoperable with switches from Extreme and Foundry

Broadband telecommunications carrier Aevia, Inc., has certified Alidian Networks' Optical Service Network family of metro DWDM (dense wave division multiplexing) systems for interoperability with layer-3/4 switching equipment from Extreme Networks and Foundry Networks.

Broadband telecommunications carrier Aevia, Inc., has certified Alidian Networks' Optical Service Network family of metro DWDM (dense wave division multiplexing) systems for interoperability with layer-3/4 switching equipment from Extreme Networks and Foundry Networks.

The certification follows Aevia's selection last September of the OSN family as the optical backbone technology for its metropolitan-area network, which begins operation this month in California. The Aevia network combines the functions of application service provider and competitive local-exchange carrier (ASP-CLEC), selling both high-speed broadband connections and the applications and services that run over those connections.

Over the last two months, Aevia tested both fast Ethernet (100-megabit-per-second) and gigabit Ethernet (one-gigabit-per-second) wire-speed connections from Extreme Summit I series and Foundry NetIron switches onto Alidian's OSN rings using multiple wavelengths. Because the Alidian systems add less than five milliseconds of round-trip delay between any two network switches for all Ethernet traffic transported in native mode, users will not need to install echo-cancellation equipment when Aevia rolls out packet-based voice services.

Both of Alidian's add/drop multiplexer platforms, the OSN 4200 (with 10 Gbps of service-bearing capacity), and the OSN 4800 (80 Gbps capacity), were involved in the testing.

About Aevia, Inc.:

Established in May 2000, Aevia is providing high-speed broadband connections over existing copper local loops to business customers in major metropolitan markets, targeting areas where fiber-optic cables are not deployed For more information, visit www.aevia.net.

About Alidian Networks:

Formed in August 1998, Alidian has developed the Optical Service Network (OSN) family, which combines electronics and photonics to permit comprehensive service delivery, breadth and awareness within a single highly scalable architecture for the dynamic metropolitan-area network (MAN) environment.
