XO Communications has entered into a teaming agreement with Exalt Communications Inc., a manufacturer of next-generation microwave backhaul systems, to pursue business opportunities with telecommunications service providers and wireless carriers using the XO licensed Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS) spectrum.
Under the agreement with Exalt, XO Communications will offer spectrum access for use with Exalt microwave backhaul systems developed specifically to XO Communications' LMDS bands, which include 28 GHz, 29 GHz, and 31 GHz frequencies.
For Exalt, electing to participate in this teaming agreement was an easy decision, reveals a representative. "Together, we offer customers the unparalleled network assets of XO Communications with best-of-breed Exalt microwave backhaul systems. It's a winning combination," explains Amir Zoufonoun, CEO of Exalt Communications.
"Microwave is a proven and necessary means for delivering high-bandwidth Ethernet backhaul, not only to macro cells but micro and pico cells in high-density urban areas," says Ernie Ortega, president of XO Carrier Services.
As the nation's largest holder of licensed Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS) spectrum with coverage in 81 metropolitan markets across the U.S., XO Communications is leveraging this wireless technology, where available, to extend the reach of its 19,000-mile nationwide fiber network.
"XO's broadband wireless capabilities open the door to a wider array of options for high-speed network access, particularly in areas where there is limited fiber access or a lack of alternative providers," Ortega continues. "Carrier Wireless Access is one more service XO brings to the table in order to provide customers with cost-effective and innovative high-speed network service solutions."
