T-Mobile Czech Republic has deployed 100-Gbps transport capabilities on parts of its network using platforms from Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU), the systems house has announced. The operator will use the capacity to support individual services, data center connections, and international transit traffic.

Alcatel-Lucent says that T-Mobile has installed its 1626 Light Manager and 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) to support 100-Gbps on its fiber-optic backbone between Prague and other cities.

“Development of fiber-optic communications has always been one of T-Mobile's priorities. Our fiber-optic backbone network now covers communication between more than 60 of the largest cities and towns in the Czech Republic,” says Frank Meywerk, technology director at T-Mobile Czech Republic. “In view of the trend of continuously growing transmitted data volumes, 100G technologies are crucial for satisfying the needs of our customers and also have the potential to reduce the costs of our network operation.”

“New types of cloud services and particularly high-definition video are leading to a 35% year-on-year increase of transmitted data volumes,” said David Grundel, Managing Director of Alcatel-Lucent Czech. “T-Mobile Czech Republic is now prepared to respond to the new trends.”
