Like competitors such as Ciena and Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens Networks is using dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) with coherent detection. Combined with E-FEC, this modulation format will support 2500 km reach without repeaters, the company asserts.

Nokia Siemens Networks made the announcement at the Broadband World Forum in Paris, where it couched the 100G unveiling as part of its new Liquid Net strategy to enable flexible bandwidth provision across the mobile (Liquid Radio), core (Liquid Core), and transport (Liquid Transport) domains. Lightwave will have more on the Liquid Net concept in a subsequent posting.
