Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says it has deployed the first 100G-capable cable-TV network in South America. Cablevision Argentina has selected the vendor’s 100-Gbps coherent optical networking technology to increase performance and meet growing bandwidth demands driven by video streaming, Web applications, file sharing, and high-definition movies.

Cablevision has more than 3 million cable-TV customers and more than 1 million Internet users in Argentina. With the growth of subscribers and traffic quickly exhausting the company’s fiber capacity, the operator was looking for a way to manage increasing traffic while reducing the complexity and cost of providing high-quality services.

"With Alcatel-Lucent’s solution, we are taking a major step towards providing a highly flexible, future-proof network, scaling up to 100G, to support current and future bandwidth demands with increased efficiencies and reduced time-to-market for new services," said Gabriel Carro, head of engineering for Cablevision Argentina.

Alcatel-Lucent is supplying its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) equipped with its 100G coherent technology. As well as expanding network capacity, the technology deployment will help Cablevision reduce operating and maintenance costs and lower power consumption, the company claims.
