Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says that OJSC Rostelecom, Russia’s largest telecommunications company, to upgrade its backbone network with 100-Gbps transmission capabilities. The link, which connects Europe through Russia to the Middle East, will cover 3,500 km on Rostelecom’s ‘North-South Transit’ route.

Rostelecom will deploy Alcatel-Lucent’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), which supports Optical Transport Network (OTN) and WDM technology on a single platform to simplify operations and cuts costs. Use of the 1830 PSS will enable Rostelecom to support a mixture of 10G, 40G, and 100G channels on the same fiber pair, which means it can reuse its existing optical infrastructure and then upgrade and expand capacity on the network as needed, according to the systems supplier.

Ivan Zima, executive director of communication networks planning and development of Rostelecom, said, “To grow our business in line with the market demand for communications services, we need to cost-efficiently increase the capacity and throughput of our key backbone routes. Proactive investments in the development of our optical transport network will improve its performance and flexibility and enable us to address the rapid growth in demand for high speed data transmission.”
