AUGUST 18, 2009 -- Communications provider Tata Communications (search Lightwave for Tata Communications) and its supplier, Tyco Telecommunications (search Lightwave for Tyco Telecommunications), a business unit of Tyco Electronics, have completed the installation, testing, and commissioning of the TGN-Intra Asia (TGN-IA) Cable System. Arriving at the conclusion of a comprehensive test program, which verified compliance with all transmission requirements, the companies have completed the final step in achieving regional and global connectivity in Southeast Asia for the TGN.

The fully operational 6,700-km TGN-IA system links Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Vietnam, and the Philippines, providing route diversity throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

"The Tata Communications team is very excited to have completed our TGN-IA cable system, with the unwavering support of Tyco Telecommunications," says Simon Cooper, vice president network strategy, architecture & optimization, Tata Communications. "This system will meet the ongoing need for increasingly robust international connectivity, and will help to enable continued growth and development in the Asia-Pacific region.

"Very recently almost all of the region's key cable systems experienced simultaneous cuts, severely impacting network traffic across Asia. Most were damaged somewhere between Hong Kong and Taiwan. TGN-IA was fortunately not disturbed as a result of Tata Communications' specific decision to route the cable system as diversely as possible, so helping to improve regional business stability and ensuring our customers remain well served," Cooper adds.

The system, which was strategically designed and routed to avoid earthquake and hazardous areas in the Asia-Pacific region, has an initial design capacity of 3.8 Tbps on a city center-to-city center basis and provides "record-breaking" latency between South East and Northern Asia, according to Tata Communications. When combined with the Tata Global Network TIC and Pacific cable systems, the Intra Asia cable system will complete Tata Communications' multi-terabit capability from India to Asia and onward to the United States, and is a complement to existing regional systems.

The TGN Intra-Asia Cable System offers a direct fiber path between Singapore and Tokyo, delivering the fastest available connectivity (RTD is 63 ms), says the provider.

"We are proud to have been a part of the successful completion of TGN-IA, which was designed and installed with our leading-edge technology," says Michael Rieger, vice president of sales, Tyco Telecommunications. "The system will not only provide enhanced communications capabilities for citizens throughout Southeast Asia, it will also promote global business growth and serve as the sole direct fiber route between Singapore and Japan."
