MRV debuts next-gen 10G media converter

JANUARY 11, 2010 -- The company's Fiber Driver EM316-10G-XY combines converter, repeater, and WDM transponder functionality in a single module.

JANUARY 11, 2010 -- MRV Communications Inc. has released the Fiber Driver EM316-10G-XY, a 10-Gbps media converter for enterprise and carrier applications. The EM316-10G-XY is the latest addition in the company's XY family of next-generation optical media converters. MRV has developed a full line of packet-optical transport (P-OTS), Carrier Ethernet, 40G networking, and out-of-band networking products.

The media converters offer multiple functions combined with a flexible multirate small form-factor pluggable (SFP) design. The devices feature built-in media conversion, signal repeating, and lambda conversion with optional WDM technology available via SFP interfaces. MRV's XY family of media converters, which debuted in 2005, includes the EM316SW-XY, for Fast Ethernet networks; the EM316T1E1-XY, for T1/E1 networks; and the EM316GSW-XY, for Fast/Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) networks.

The hot-swappable, one-slot EM316-10G-XY combines two XFP ports and one SFP+ port. It can be set to act as a redundant converter, a WDM transponder, or a 10-Gbps optical link repeater. The converter provides full 3R functionality for any 10G protocol within the range of 9.9 and 11.3 Gbps, supporting 10GbE, Fibre Channel, SONET/SDH, and FEC rates for the mentioned protocols.

The module may act as a redundant converter/transponder by providing two redundant XFP-based optical links for the SFP+-based access port. When equipped with WDM XFP optics, the module becomes a redundant WDM transponder. With XFP optics reaching 100 km without amplification, the EM316-10G-XY extends distances over gray or WDM networks for enterprise and carrier markets.

In XFP-repeater mode, the device provides XFP-to-XFP signal regeneration over multiple hops. Each hop may be up to 100 km without need for amplification.

"10-Gbps networks are in flux with new fiber and copper standards hitting the market and companies pushing this performance to new parts of the enterprise, which is driving an increase in demand for network flexibility," says Noam Lotan, chief executive officer of MRV Communications. "The EM316-10G-XY allows our customers to optimize existing network infrastructures and prepare for future network evolutions in a cost effective way."

With large amounts of data traveling between locations, proper management is critical to successful network operations. Using MRV's MegaVision Pro network management system, users have full graphical management of a network of EM316-10G-XY devices. Additionally, the module supports Link Integrity Notification (LIN), in which a loss of link on an input port automatically shuts off any associated output ports. LIN ensures that a change in connection status propagates from one end device to the other.

The EM316-10G-XY module is available now from MRV sales representatives and channel partners worldwide.
