APRIL 19, 2010 -- Connectivity provider Intellifiber Networks has activated a new low-latency system between New York City and Chicago. Simultaneously, Ciena announced that Intellifiber has installed the systems provider’s CN 4200 RS FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform throughout its core and metro networks to enable these low-latency links, as well as similar services that connect New York City and Chicago to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Intellifiber says it can now offer Gigabit Ethernet, 2.5-Gbps, and 10-Gbps wavelength and Ethernet services “with the fastest roundtrip speeds currently available.” Several major financial institutions and service providers are already taking advantage of the system, Intellifiber asserts.

“Our purpose-built low-latency route provides the fastest path for financial institutions and carriers seeking secure and diverse routing between the New York City and Chicago metros,” said Clint Heiden, president of Intellifiber Networks. “Intellifiber has met the demand head on with industry-leading metrics around our low-latency service offering. These metrics include guaranteed installation within 48 hours, 24x7 real-time latency monitoring, and scalable bandwidth solutions up to 100 Gbps.”

Every route segment has been designed for speed by leveraging the latest in dispersion compensation technology for the reduction of latency, the carrier says. Meanwhile, Ciena says that Intellifiber has deployed the vendor’s CN 4200 RS platform with ROADM functionality to handle dynamic wavelength routing and bandwidth provisioning across its network as well as an optimized design that helps lower delays in optical connections by up to 20 percent for latency-sensitive applications, such as algorithmic trading.

Intellifiber has designed its low-latency architecture to avoid congested interconnection points such as Euclid Avenue in Cleveland and provide routing options around 401 N. Broad Street in Philadelphia for greater resiliency. Customers can reach data centers and carrier hotels in the New York City and Chicago metropolitan markets on paths optimized to limit equipment latency. In addition to fast connections on dedicated infrastructure it owns and operates, Intellifiber has multiple diverse non-express paths available to connect between these markets.

Intellifiber Networks is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cavalier Telephone.
