MAY 11, 2010 -- Xtera Communications Inc. has announced a new contract with Global Crossing (NASDAQ: GLBC) to upgrade a legacy system fiber pair on Network Segment C (linking Brookhaven, NY, and Whitesands, UK) of Global Crossing's Atlantic Crossing (AC-1) network.

Xtera's contract with Global Crossing covers the deployment of the Xtera NXT Submarine Line Terminal Equipment (SLTE) with 20-Gbps differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) technology. The NXT Submarine Line Terminal Equipment is designed to enable upgrade of existing submarine networks while smoothly integrating with existing equipment.

In 2009, Xtera completed upgrades of Segments A+B2 (connecting Brookhaven, Sylt, Germany, and Amsterdam, Netherlands) and Segment C along with a capacity addition on the Pan American Crossing (PAC) express fiber pair between Fort Amador, Panama, and Grover Beach, CA.

"Xtera's solution has enabled us to effectively upgrade to beyond the original system design capacity," said James H. Watts, Global Crossing's vice president, transport and infrastructure engineering. "With the upgrades from 2009, we will have added more than 1 terabit of capacity on AC-1 using Xtera's 20-Gbps technology. These upgrades help us to provide a robust service portfolio for our customers by maximizing the utility of AC-1."
