FEBRUARY 25, 2010 -- Portuguese Cable operator ZON Multimedia will deploy a GPON-based fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network using equipment from Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU), the systems supplier says. ZON will use the FTTH network to supply such broadband services as HDTV, VoIP, and video on demand.
ZON Multimedia will deploy the GPON gear in new expansion areas and in a network development environment where HFC/FTTH technologies coexist. In addition to equipment, Alcatel-Lucent will also lend its expertise in professional services, including installation, OSS integration, commissioning services, and maintenance.
“Having over 1.5 million customers, ZON is the largest pay-TV operator in Portugal. As a leader, we want to keep on providing end-users with the best solutions on the market,” said Paulo Ribeiro, board member of ZON TV Cabo. “Though our network is very competitive and allowing us to successfully offer bandwidth-demanding services, such as HDTV and high-speed Internet, we decided to explore parallel ways to bring the best of multimedia applications to our customers. Alcatel-Lucent’s proven GPON solution and its experience in deploying fiber networks will help us introduce this new technology into our network -- enabling us to expand our product and services offer to our customers,” he added.
Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fiber-to-the-User (ISAM FTTU) GPON platform, its 5520 Access Management System (AMS) as well as a range of optical network terminals (ONTs).
