Gennum drives 3-Gbits/sec. HD-SDI over optical

SEPTEMBER 7, 2007 — Gennum Corporation (Burlington, Canada) released its 3-Gbit/sec. optical modules at the International Broadcaster's Convention in Amsterdam, Booth 10.119. The dual transmitter, GO2922, and dual receiver, GO2920, meet the current Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) 3-Gbits/sec. SDI standard.

Broadcast equipment manufacturers can leverage the modules in cameras, routers, monitors, video production switchers, and distribution amplifiers. The products transmit at 3 Gbits/sec. over a single optical serial link, which can lead to cost, power, and footprint reductions with 1080p50/60, HD 4:4:4, and HD 12-bit video formats. They reportedly handle pathological signals in SD-SDI, HD-SDI, and 3G-SDI robustly. GO2920's typical power consumption equals 470 mW using a single power supply of +3.3 V. GO2922 power consumption hits 670 mW at +3.3 V.

The modules are available in hot-swappable, industry-standard small-form pluggable (SFP) packages. The GO2922 dual-channel transmitter features two independent 1310-nm transmitters; the GO2920 dual-channel receiver contains two independent optical receivers.
