Tyco Telecommunications and Looking Glass Networks provision multi-point 10-Gbit/sec wavelength service in under 10 days
October 10, 2002--Looking Glass Networks Inc., a facilities-based provider of metropolitan data transport services, and Tyco Telecommunications, provider of advanced broadband communications systems and services, jointly deployed a 10-Gbit wavelength circuit connecting London, New York City, and Newark, NJ in less than ten days for a new Tyco Telecommunications customer that had an immediate high-bandwidth application requirement.
Noting an industry average of 20-30 days to turn-up a private line circuit, Looking Glass rapidly provisioned a 10-Gbit wavelength--the highest speed commercially available today--in under 10 days. To accomplish this, Looking Glass installed a DWDM system on its own metro fiber rings. The newly provisioned metro ring enables Tyco Telecommunications to extend the footprint of the Tyco Global Network within the New York metropolitan area and, in this case, directly to a customer premise.
"Rapid provisioning to 'off-network' locations is becoming an increasingly important requirement for Global Service Providers," contends Mike Rieger, managing director of global sales and marketing for Tyco Telecommunications. "To deliver the high quality of service demanded by today's customers, we need reliable and stable metro service providers who are also flexible enough to support rapid provisioning. The joint execution on this project with Looking Glass demonstrates our resolve to provide total customer satisfaction from start to finish, and exemplifies the relationships we have in place for our Trans-Atlantic, European and Trans-Pacific networks," he adds.
"With 10-Gbit/secs wavelengths approaching an average of 20 days to provision on existing equipment, completing the installation of DWDM equipment and the provisioning of a 10 Gbit/sec wavelength in less than 10 days is a great accomplishment for Looking Glass," notes Brian Van Steen, senior analyst with PointEast Research.
