Wavelength-division multiplexer

The Model 381 wavelength-division multiplexer offers the ability to mix any two full-duplex signals on a single fiber-optic cable. For example, cable TV can be mixed with Ethernet, or data streams of different speeds -- such as T1/E1 and Ethernet -- can be mixed. This passive, singlemode wdm doubles the data-carrying capacity of a fiber pair. The unit combines and separates individual wavelengths, allowing individual channels to be simultaneously transmitted on the same fiber. One of the signal paths can be used for out-of-band signaling as a form of network management for applications requiring ultrahigh reliability. The stand-alone device has an insertion loss of <0.3 dB for both channels and at least 15.5-dB isolation. Bandwidth at each wavelength is 䔸 nm. The multiplexer is housed in a 8.4 ¥ 1.7 ¥ 9.1-inch tabletop box and costs $495.
