Monolithic coupler

The 1ٺ monolithic 1550-nm MultiClad coupler can be used for wavelength combining and splitting in optically amplified high-bit-rate multiwavelength transmission systems. It can also be used as a power splitter for optically- amplified cable-TV systems. According to the manufacturer, the coupler is optimized for low insertion loss and uniformity over the full erbium passband. A single input fiber is fused to eight output fibers, and the entire coupling region is encased in a layer of glass cladding. This patented process is intended to produce greater reliability and a smaller monolithic package in comparison with the cascaded-fused- biconic 1 ¥ 2 solutions currently available in the industry.
