Turk Telekom, Huawei trial 2-Tbps WDM

Huawei and service provider Turk Telekom say they have successfully completed a field trial of a WDM optical transport system that delivered a total of 40 Tbps on Turk Telekom's live network.

Huawei and service provider Turk Telekom say they have successfully completed a 2-Tbps field trial of a WDM optical transport system that is capable of delivering a total of 40 Tbps on Turk Telekom's live fiber-optic network.

The partners conducted the 2-Tbps trial over 307 km of G.652 fiber between the Turkish capital of Ankara and Cankiri. The optical transmission leveraged 32QAM modulation to deliver spectral efficiency of up to 8 bps/Hz, which can deliver up to 40-Tbps in the C-band transmission.

A second aspect of the trial used hybrid QAM technology to deliver 20-Tbps capacity without regeneration over a trial link that consisted of a fiber loop between Ankara and Istanbul that stretched 1750 km. The hybrid QAM technology enables software-based tuning of such modulation formats as QPSK, 8QAM, 16QAM, 32QAM, and 64QAM for different optical signals. The technology is compatible with current WDM systems and therefore protects operators' optical transport infrastructure investment, Huawei says.

Turk Telekom's backbone WDM network stretches more than 34,000 km using Huawei WDM systems. The service provider installed Huawei 100G coherent transmission technology in 2012.
