OPTICAL PERFORMANCE MONITOR

Aug. 1, 2000

A new optical performance monitor (OPM) in a card-size design is suitable for wavelength locking. The OPM measures optical power, wavelength, and signal-to-noise ratio. Applications include power equalization, multichannel wavelength locking, long-term span monitoring, system commissioning, and fault sectionalization. The monitor is less than 1 in. thick with a customizable footprint. It supplies a peak-power range of +5 to -50 dB and optical signal-to-noise ratio monitoring capabilities of 25 to 30 dB. The OPM can measure noise to -80 dBm and can be used for systems with channel spacing as narrow as 50 GHz.
