SEPTEMBER 6, 2007 — Mountain Telephone, a rural cooperative communications provider, deployed Fujitsu Network Communications' (Richardson, TX) FLASHWAVE optical networking products and NETSMART management solution to bring Internet protocol television (IPTV) and other voice, data, and video services to its rural KY subscriber base.

Based in West Liberty, KY, the Mountain Telephone network reaches Bath, Elliott, Menifee, Morgan, and Wolfe counties, servicing 17,000 customers. Mountain Telephone is replacing all legacy switching, transport, and access equipment to improve its IP-based service offering. The provider chose Fujitsu's FLASHWARE products with network capabilities and projected return on investment (ROI) under consideration, says Travis Keeton, network engineer, Mountain Telephone.

The company upgraded to a 10-Gbits/sec. IPTV infrastructure operating over its existing fiber infrastructure. FLASHWARE 4500 multiservice provisioning platforms (MSPPs) enable full compatibility with the existing voice and data network, while adding Ethernet and video capacity. For high-capacity transmission and scalability, the communications co-op implemented the FLASHWAVE 7120 optical extension system, using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to carry the range of services over a single optical fiber.
