Arelion (formerly Telia Carrier) says it has established a new fiber backbone route between Norway and Continental Europe. The route was created at the behest of the Norwegian Communications Authority in July 2020, with the goal of ensuring connectivity by creating route diversity between the country and the rest of Europe.
The 750-km fiber route runs between Oslo, Norway, and Esbjerg, Denmark, where it connects to Aerlion’s pan-European fiber infrastructure. The new system leverages Bulk Fiber Network’s recently completed HAVSIL fiber network (see “Bulk Fiber Networks completes terrestrial segment of HAVSIL Nordic fiber network”). In fact, Arelion says its new route includes access to a pair of new points of presence (PoPs), one each in Bulk Fiber Network’s OS-IX data center in Oslo and N01 DC in Kristiansand, Norway.
Arelion will offer IP, Wavelength, and Ethernet services on the route, which the company says offers increased resilience, capacity, and diversity to the market. “Resilient and secure connectivity across the globe has never been more important. Ensuring Norway’s access to Internet through this new, diverse route to the European continent really embodies our company mission, to keep the world connected,” commented Staffan Göjeryd, CEO at Arelion.
“This new secure route for electronic communications, which was awarded to Arelion, will help Norway address its growing and diverse traffic needs to Europe and provide increased connection security for our nation, in the event of serious incidents occurring,” added Elise K. Lindeberg, director, Security Department at the Norwegian Communications Authority.
