MegaFon, Huawei complete Phase 1 of 100G DREAM project

Russian service provider MegaFon says it has completed Phase I of the Diverse Route for European and Asian Markets (DREAM) project, a Eurasian intercontinental high-speed fiber backbone network, using 100G WDM technology from Huawei.

Russian service provider MegaFon says it has completed Phase I of the Diverse Route for European and Asian Markets (DREAM) project, a Eurasian intercontinental high-speed fiber backbone network, using 100G WDM technology from Huawei.

With annual traffic growth of over 50% expected between Asia and Europe, MegaFon is building a new network connecting Europe and Asia with the shortest possible network to ensure low service delay and high user service reliability.

"Every year the volume of traffic sent from Europe to Asia, along with the demand for the capacity of communication channels, is steadily growing. Therefore, we view this project as both significant and promising for MegaFon's business," said MegaFon CEO Ivan Tavrin.

The DREAM system, which will run approximately 8700-km from Frankfurt-am-Main to the Kazakhstan-China border, is designed to transport all types of telecommunication traffic between Europe and Asia. In Phase I of the project MegaFon is ready to provide its foreign partners with reliable DWDM communication channels at speeds up to 10 Gbps. The full system capacity is 8 Tbps.

Huawei says the fiber-optic network employs some of the world's leading technologies, such as 100G coherent SD-FEC line cards, hybrid amplifiers, and OTN, to provide the shortest, most secure and advanced high-speed information path between Asia and Europe.

In this project Huawei’s advanced 100G SD-FEC technology provides ultra long-haul signal transmission, and its OTN technology enables flexible service access and grooming. On the one hand, these two technologies enable the network to deliver huge bandwidth to users within a short period of time; on the other hand, they enhance MegaFon's long-haul service provisioning capability, enabling MegaFon to better serve global users, Huawei asserts.

"MegaFon is building a silk road of information. This road will play a significant role in enhancing economic cooperation and human communication between Asia and Europe," said Wan Biao, CEO of Huawei Russia.
