Global network exchange services provider Epsilon will upgrade its packet mesh network with 100-Gbps capabilities based on technology Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) will provide.

Epsilon’s exchange facilities provide a managed presence for 500 carrier and service provider customers globally. The company’s services are based on a worldwide converged core optical and packet mesh network, physical colocation facilities, as well as the Epsilon’s experience in system integration and engineering support services.

To meet significant increases in bandwidth demand in connection with the high-definition video, high-speed Internet access, voice-over-IP content delivery, and associated advanced services of their customers, Epsilon will move to 100-Gbps transmission in its optical transport and router equipment. The network will see the addition of coherent transmission technology via Alcatel-Lucent’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) converged WDM/OTN based-platform. On the router end, Epsilon is also deploying Alcatel-Lucent’s FP3-based 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) technology on the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router.

Alcatel-Lucent also will provide its 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM) to oversee for both the IP and optical pplatforms.

“At Epsilon we are seeing a rapidly growing market with demands for higher bandwidth,” says Jerzy Szlosarek, COO of Epsilon. “We recognized that we had to evolve our network to be more robust, more flexible, and have higher capacity to be able to offer a broader range of services to our carrier customers. Alcatel-Lucent’s converged solution provides us with the benefits of both optical and IP networks with full interoperability between them, and the 100G coherent interface cost-effectively builds upon our existing WDM-based infrastructure.”
