Australia-Japan Cable triples submarine network capacity via Infinera ICE4 coherent transmission

Infinera (NASDAQ:INFN) says it has supplied its fourth-generation Infinite Capacity Engine (ICE4) technology to the operators of the Australia-Japan Cable Network. The enhanced coherent transmission capabilities will enable the DTN-X systems used on the submarine network to triple system capacity.

The 12,700-km Australia-Japan Cable Network began operations in 2001 with an initial design capacity of 640 Gbps connecting the two endpoints via Guam (see “Australia Japan Cable nearing completion after reaching Australian shores”). The system upgraded to 40-Gbps wavelength capabilities in 2012 with Ciena technology, then to 100-Gbps wavelengths beginning in 2014 with the help of Infinera (see “Australia Japan Cable completes multi-terabit submarine network upgrade with Infinera”). The addition of the ICE4 technology will add a 60% end-of-life capacity increase to the submarine network, Infinera asserts. Australia-Japan Cable will be able to increase capacity efficiently via DTN-X’s Instant Bandwidth capabilities as well, Infinera adds.
