Huawei Marine says it will help Tele Greenland deploy a 100-Gbps submarine network along the Greenlandic Westcoast and upgrade the capacity of the Greenland Connect submarine cable system. Greenland Connect links the Arctic nation with Iceland (and forward on to the rest of Europe) and Canada.

The new undersea cable system, dubbed Greenland Connect North, will connect Nuuk, Maniitsoq, Sisimiut, and Aasiaat (see figure above). Greenland Connect North will have a design capacity of 4.8 Tbps.

The new 100G submarine line terminal equipment (SLTE) for the existing Greenland Connect system will increase total system capacity from 1.92 Tbps to 12.8 Tbps.

Taken together, Huawei Marine says the projects will leverage the company's new generation OTN-based unified terrestrial and submarine transmission equipment. The systems will enable Tele Greenland's fiber-optic networks to support multi-granularity OTN cross-connection and flexible bandwidth allocation.

"The Greenland Connect system is Greenland's vital communication line, and there is little margin for error in the implementation and operation of the new system," explains Tele Greenland Chief Wholesale Officer Flemming Drechsel. "Over the course of the negotiation process with several well-esteemed system providers, the Huawei Marine team has won Tele Greenland's full confidence, that Huawei Marine will provide the highly reliable 100G DWDM equipment needed to enable us to deliver and fulfill our commitments to our customers."
