Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. used the North American Network Operators Group (NANOG) meeting this week in Vancouver, British Columbia, to demonstrate single-wavelength 600-Gbps optical transmission via its 1FINITY T600 Transport platform. The capability, which includes software provisioning of multiple data rates, leveraged a coherent DSP that NTT Electronics (NEL) developed in partnership with Fujitsu.

The combination of the coherent DSP and software programmability enables the 1FINITY T600 to use the right modulation scheme to optimize modulation scheme, reach, capacity, and power consumption for the application at hand, says the company. Those applications can include data center interconnect (DCI), metro, long-haul, and submarine networks.

In the demonstration, the 1FINITY T600 transmitted 600 Gbps error-free over a point-to-point link using 64QAM modulation at 69 Gbaud and 75-GHz grid spacing. It also achieved service turn-up and onsite reprovisioning of signal rates and modulation formats at 300 Gbps, 400 Gbps, and 600 Gbps. The company’s FSS2 system software provided OpenConfig over gRPC Network Management Interface (gNMI) for system configuration, streaming telemetry for network monitoring, and enhanced diagnostics.

“Fujitsu with NEL is the first optical vendor to effectively demonstrate programmable 600G in North America,” said Ian Redpath, practice leader at Ovum, via a Fujitsu press release describing the demonstration. “By using selectable modulation formats, FEC, and baud rates, network operators will be able to maximize the bandwidth for specific reach scenarios. And, Fujitsu’s streaming telemetry capabilities will resonate with the cloud service providers.”

Fujitsu Network Communications expects to bring the 1FINITY T600 Transport platform to market in the first quarter of next year, according to Rod Naphan, deputy head of the Network Products Business Unit.
