OnTopic: Cable’s coax to fiber transformation

Oct. 21, 2025

Cable providers are facing various factors that are driving them to pivot to a coax-tofiber strategy. This trend comes at a time when it s grip on the U. S. broadband market is set to narrow. Dell’Oro Group forecasts that, by the end of the decade, fiber will hold a 33% market share in North America, with cable’s market share shrinking from its current 62% to 53%. Further, the research firm notes that there will be a higher percentage of fiber overbuilding of fiber, even by MSOs. Today, the cable operators are going to fiber on a few paths.

Cable operators’ decision to overbuild a market with fiber will be driven by a few factors: competition, and the condition of existing amplifiers and coax does not make economic sense.

In this eBook, we’ll consider the factors cable operators are considering when transforming their networks to fiber, as well as new training programs to address the impending broadband labor shortage.
