August 30, 2002--Level 3 Communications, Inc. (www.level3.com) has been selected by DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe), the government backed pan-European research community network operator, to provide communications services between London and New York.
The 2.5-Gbit/sec wavelength terminates at a Level 3 data center in New York and will connect the European research networks with those in the United States. This will enable both academic groups to communicate using the Global Terabit Research Network, which is a partnership to establish a worldwide next-generation Internet to interconnect national and multinational high-speed research and education networks.
"We selected Level 3 because it was able to provide DANTE with end-to-end connectivity over fibers that are owned by the company," said Dai Davies, general manager of DANTE. "This gives DANTE the essential connectivity between U.S. researchers and their counterparts in the European research networks of 32 countries across Europe that connect to the pan-European GEANT network."
GEANT is the Consortium of European Research's sixth-generation network, connecting approximately 3,000 universities and research centers across 32 countries.
Level 3 offers a range of communications services targeted toward the world's top 300 bandwidth customers, including companies such as AOL, BT, Cable & Wireless, COLT Telecom Group, France Telecom and Microsoft.
DANTE is a Cambridge, UK based organization set up to build, manage, and develop advanced network services for the European research and educational community. It is the coordinating partner of the GEANT consortium and responsible for the construction of GEANT.
