Vitesse ships over 5 million burst-mode TIAs for FTTx

Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. says it has shipped more than five million of its VSC7716 burst-mode transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) for EPON in FTTx applications.

Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. says it has shipped more than five million of its VSC7716 burst-mode transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) for EPON in FTTx applications.

Infonetics Research estimates that approximately 5.7 million EPON optical line termination (OLT) ports will be shipped by 2012; therefore, the milestone is proof of Vitesse's market leadership position in burst-mode EPON TIAs, the company asserts.

"Vitesse's burst-mode TIA provides the industry with a high-performance solution that will allow the optical module vendors to facilitate volume shipments into the EPON market," said Dr. David Li, chief technical officer of Hisense Broadband Technologies, which manufactures EPON transceivers. "The chip's high sensitivity, fast settling time, and large dynamic range are features that are in high demand by the telcos."

"We are extremely pleased with VSC7716's performance and Vitesse's ability to support high production volumes," said Kou-Wei Wang, vice president and general manager at CyOptics, a provider of optical components for broadband products. The VSC7716 has a zero reliability failure rate in the field, according to Vitesse.

The EPON market has grown dramatically over the last five years, especially in the Asia Pacific region, with more growth anticipated. According to Infonetics Research, the combined worldwide spending on all FTTH and FTTB equipment will grow from $825 million in 2009 to $3.3 billion in 2014.
