JULY 22, 2009 -- VI Systems GmbH (search Lightwave for VI Systems) has introduced the T40-150C transimpedance amplifier (TIA). The chip is designed for the use in high-speed optical transceivers with a data rate of up to 40 Gbps.

The announcement follows the unveiling of a 40-Gbps photodetector module earlier this month. (See "VI Systems offers 850-nm photodetector modules for up to 40G."

The T40-150C is specified for PIN photodetectors and can amplify input currents of up to 2 mA p-p with low duty cycle distortion. The chip provides an input sensitivity of -13 dBm while maintaining a BER of 10E-12. The TIA operates off a single +3.3-V power supply and is in available as die. It features a power consumption of 145 mW.

Target applications are short reach and very short reach optical receivers and transceiver modules used in optical communication networks as well as in chip-to-chip optical interconnects in the computer industry.

The T40-150C chip is available as an engineering sample in die form. The dimensions are 800 µm x 600 µm.
