IPtronics samples 25G multi-channel optical interconnect chipset
IPtronics A/S says it is sampling to Tier 1 supercomputing server manufacturers what it asserts is the first multi-channel 25G VCSEL chipset. The chipset, which comprises a VCSEL driver and transimpedance amplifier (TIA), promises what IPtronics says is a “drastic” reduction in cost and power consumption.
Moving to multi-channel 25-Gbps optical interconnect will enable server designers to fully unlock the processing power of current and future processors, IPtronics asserts.
“Once again, IPtronics has delivered the innovation in the optical interconnect market that will enable the next wave of supercomputing and drive the continued growth in our industry,” said Niels Finseth, CEO of IPtronics. “We believe the VCSEL approach will be the technology of choice for short-reach parallel optical interconnects at 25G and we are well positioned by being first to market and providing initial samples to Tier 1 server OEM customers.”
Features of the new IPtronics VCSEL driver and TIA chipset include:
- Multi-channel support, which enables parallel optical implementation for designing optical interconnects with a bandwidth of 100 Gbps to 350 Gbps.
- Power dissipation of 220 mW (typical, all inclusive) per channel (transceiver and receiver) enables four-channel optical interconnects of less than 1 W. The chipset also offers a low-power standby mode.
- Programmable de-emphasis of the receiver and input equalizer of the transceiver enables longer board traces and system design flexibility.
- 25-Gbps to 28-Gbps operation enables the chipset to support multiple protocols.
