Fujitsu Optical Components offers 400ZR+ optical transceivers

Oct. 13, 2020
The optical modules, which support coherent WDM transmission at reaches greater than 120 km, should reach commercial deployment next year, FOC expects.

Fujitsu Optical Components Ltd. (FOC) says it has begun sampling 400G ZR+ optical transceivers in QSFP56-DD and OSFP form factors. The optical modules, which support coherent WDM transmission at reaches greater than 120 km, should reach commercial deployment next year, FOC expects. The company also offers 400ZR capabilities in the same module form factors.

FOC says its 400G coherent pluggable optical transceivers leverage a next-generation coherent DSP based on a 7-nm CMOS process, silicon photonics based integrated optical devices, and high-density packaging technology. This combination enables compact size, low power consumption, and low cost per bit, the company asserts.

The 400ZR+ MSA specifications build on the OIF’s 400ZR Implementation Agreement (see “OpenZR+ MSA Group releases first specification”). While the OIF specifications target reaches up to 120 km, good for data center edge applications, 400ZR+ extends reach beyond that mark. The use of oFEC, developed within the Open ROADM MSA, is a key enabler of this performance improvement. 400ZR+ optical transceivers also support 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) to 400GbE coherent transmission on the line side and a similar range of interfaces on the client side.

Both specification sets promote interoperability among modules from multiple vendors. FOC notes that NTT Electronics and Acacia Communications demonstrated module-level interoperability between their DSPs in 400ZR and OpenZR+ operating modes, using modules supplied by FOC and Acacia.
