JDS Uniphase Corp. announced its CT2 Series 2.5 Gbits/sec, small form factor pluggable (SFP) MSA transceiver for fiber-optic data communications and telecommunications.
In addition to being fully OC-48 (2.5 Gbits/sec), OC-12 (622 Mbits/sec), and OC-3 (155 Mbits/sec) SONET compliant, the CT2 is designed for 1310- and 1550-nm wavelengths and for short, intermediate, and long reach applications.
The small, data communications style package is MSA compliant and uses industry standard, plug-in, LC duplex type optical connectors, which are easier to install and more resistant to damage than optical fiber pigtails used in other high performance telecommunications products. Superior performance in critical areas, such as jitter generation, enables SONET communications, making the CT2 Series well suited for network edge applications.
The JDS Uniphase CT2 is one of the few pluggable transceivers that meet all SONET specifications, including receiver reflectance, and provides automatic extinction ratio control for the entire life of the product. It also complies with the digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM) interface for optical transceivers, SFF-8472, Revision 9.3 including all enhanced options.
Since the CT2 Series is "hot-pluggable" both optically and electrically, upgrades to faster rates or longer reaches can be achieved by simply plugging in the desired model. Other offerings require manual operations to remove and replace components whenever an upgrade is necessary.
The CT2 has a microprocessor-based design that allows the implementation of all the DDM functions in the MSA, including those listed as optional, providing control and monitoring capability over all internal parameters.
The CT2's custom-designed 5-pin PIN/TIA optical sub-assembly has one pin dedicated for average received diode current, allowing a true measure of optical power and resulting in more accurate monitoring of the received optical input power as required by the MSA. Other product offerings that rely on a 4-pin package PIN/TIA sub-assembly are inaccurate or become saturated at high optical signal levels.
The CT2 achieves a maximum jitter generation specification of 60 mUI p-p and 6 mUI rms and, after the laser is enabled, has a fast optical turn-on time of less than 10 sec as compared to the more typical 100 sec. The CT2 Series can be used at data rates from 155 Mb/s to 2.7 Gbits/sec and has an extinction ratio control of ±2 dB over temperature and data rate ranges. It has a standard operating temperature range of 5 °C to +75 °C with some versions offered in an extended operating temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C.
The CT2 2.5 Gbits/sec SFP transceiver is now available for order from JDS Uniphase representatives and distributors worldwide for OC-48 in SR, IR-1 and IR-2 models. It is available for OC-3 and OC-12 in SR, IR-1, IR-2, LR-1, and LR-2 models. The LR-1 and LR-2 models for OC-48 are also expected in 2003.
JDS Uniphase Corp. has its U.S. headquarters in San Jose, CA.
