TeraXion demonstrates C-band fixed and tunable dispersion compensators

25 September 2003 Rimini, Italy Lightwave -- TeraXion Inc., developer of advanced optical components for high-speed optical networks, presented its latest chromatic dispersion compensation products at the ECOC 2003 exhibition and conference held this week in Rimini, Italy. The ClearSpectrum product line features dispersion compensation and tuning over the full C-band, low insertion loss regardless of the dispersion levels and a very small footprint. It offers flexible TuneX configurations allowing for wide tuning range around different nominal dispersion offsets (negative, positive, or null). The product is also available for L-band operation.

Chromatic dispersion compensators are used in optical networks to reduce the accumulated dispersion in optical pulses carrying digital information. TeraXion's fiber Bragg grating-based dispersion compensators are meant to complement and even replace current solutions using dispersion compensating fiber, which is known to have limited performance in many applications. The tunable version of the product is perfectly suited for the dynamic adjustment of dispersion compensation level in next-generation systems using very high transmission rates (40 Gbits/sec) or optical path dynamic reconfiguration. The product can also be used as a variable dispersion emulator in test and measurement applications.

"Our customers are very impressed with the recent improvements we have made to the product," contends Martin Guy, chief technology officer of TeraXion. "After two years of product enhancement and continuous increased sales, we have a very stable and reliable product. The multi-channel fiber Bragg gratings is an established technology," he adds.

ClearSpectrum products have been shipped to a variety of customers for various applications. They have successfully been deployed in field trials as well as in non-commercial telecommunications systems, say company representatives.
