Cielo Communications signs MSA to develop small footprint OC-192 optical transponders
Cielo Communications, a provider of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) technology and integrated optical subsystems, announced it has joined an existent multi-source agreement (MSA) with Infineon Technologies, JDS Uniphase, Nortel Networks and LightLogic, Inc. to develop a small footprint OC-192 optical transponder.
The MSA, which follows common mechanical, electrical and optical specifications, specifies a full drop-in 10 Gbps solution. For system manufacturers, this will translate into reduced risk of supply; greater assurance that solutions will be low cost; and a single board design that is flexible for different physical layer interfaces. The MSA provides significant space and cost savings for high-speed optical links requiring a reach of 600 meters to 12 km.
Under the MSA specifications, the OC-192 transponders will feature a 200-pin connector with a pinout that is functionally compliant with Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) specifications. It will further offer an approximate 50% reduction in size over current solutions, making it the smallest 10 Gbps solution currently available. These devices will provide a serial 10 Gbps optical data link in high-speed networking equipment such as routers, switches, add/drop multiplexers, and digital cross-connects.
